The Best of Barrhaven’s Nature Retreats
October 18, 2021
Here in Ottawa, there are plenty of choices when it comes to spending time outdoors. Between the Greenbelt and Gatineau Park, it’s easy to take a break from the screen and experience nature. But if you don’t want to go far from Barrhaven, here are our top three local favourites:
This 23-acre conservation area runs along the west bank of the Rideau River and features unique wetlands and floodplains. With plenty of parking, this is a great recreational park or a spot to have a picnic. See what wildlife you can spot from the scenic walkways and boardwalks, and take the 1.5 km stroll through beautiful natural habitats.
The Jock River
Known locally as the Mighty Jock, this tributary of the Rideau River is a popular choice for canoeists and kayakers. Although there is a fair amount of urbanization, you'll also find a surprising amount of natural shoreline, especially near the Black Rapids where Ottawa's Greenbelt crosses the Rideau River. You will also find several community parks bordering the river along the way.
The three locks at Long Island mark the northern end of the "Long Reach", the longest section of the Rideau unbroken by locks. The locks are surrounded by swaying long grass, and nearby there is the ruin of an old farmhouse. This house was once surrounded by a bustling village called Long Island in the mid-19th century. What happened to this lost village is still a mystery today.
